A podcast is simply audio content that you can listen to at anytime or anyplace. Despite the name, listening does not require the use of an iPod. Most podcasts are playable directly from the show's website or downloadable to any portable playing device.  You can even listen to most podcasts on the new generation cell phones.

What separates a podcast from a mainstream radio show is that the content is time-shifted.  That is just a fancy way of saying that you don't have to be tuned in when the show is live - you can setup a player to download each time a new show is produced so you can play it on your schedule.  Forget tuning in at noon to catch your favorite music show.  Now, you can hear it at 6PM when you are at the gym.
